Auxiliary Method for the Diagnosis of the Implant Periapical Lesion

Auxiliary Method for the Diagnosis of the Implant Periapical Lesion

Author(s): Victor Eduardo de Souza Batista*, Joel Ferreira Santiago Junior, Daniel Augusto

The implant periapical lesion (IPL) is an infectious lesion limited to the apical part of the implant, in which on x-ray, an IPL appears as a radiolucent image involving the apex of a clinically stable dental implant (arrow). An IPL may be classified as active or inactive. When an IPL is in its active form, the patient has clinical signs, such as pain, reddening, and edema. The infection can result in a fistula, becoming symptomatic. In its inactive form, the lesion can be completely asymptomatic. In conclusion, the periapical x-ray is important to assist in the diagnosis of the IPL.
