Mozaffar Din Shah and first Sanitarium for TB Patients

Author(s): Mohammad Javad Nasiri

Mozaffar Din Shah was the fifth Qajar king of Persia. During his reign (1853-1907), tuberculosis was one of the major causes of death in Iran. In the middle of his life, he was infected with tuberculosis and advised by French physicians to spend his recovery period in a place with fresh mountain air. Therefore, a piece of land was purchased by prime minister in order to build a small palace for the king. After king’s death, this palace was gradually changed and the first sanitarium for TB patients was established in Iran.
